~INTRODUCTION~
It starts with a grasshopper.
There it stands, twitching its antennas and staring at the world through big black eyes.
But this is the day he dies...or at least that's what Jay thought as she silently crept towards the insect, licking her chops.
Jay. The plump, slow-in-the-head kittypet. Oh sure, very pretty, but not much else. She had spunk but that made her look snooty.
The grasshopper leaped from his spot. Jay gave a sigh and sat back on her haunches, staring straight at the ground with her sad blue eyes. She was hopeless--just a kittypet. No adventure, no land of her own...no personality.
But that was the opposite of what the smoke gray tom across the field thought of her. He was leaning against the tree, judging Jay's movements through flaming amber eyes. The shade only just covered him, but he knew it wouldn't be long until the kittypet followed the grasshopper to the tom.
Silver like ash...flame and snow in her fur... It was almost too ironic that this she-cat was the exact description StarClan had given the young tom who just waited cooly in the shade of his tree.
This "young tom." Blaze and only 6 moons to be exact. A giant destiny, and it was at his clawtips. Sorrow clutched his heart as he remembered all those moons of loneliness. He barely remembered his parents. He did remember milk, however-lots of it. But he barely knew his mother.
StarClan must have saved him, in return for a promise. These promises were scattered in shards of prophecy, coming to young Blaze in dreams. The one he was working on now:
The Blazing Legacy is coming back.
There will be three,
One of fire and snow and ash and sky...
Hopeless. No adventure. No land. No personality--
But that was about to change.
~CHAPTER 1~
Jay stood tall, her blue eyes sparking with anger. She had followed the grasshopper to the low hanging tree where a "shady" character stood, eyeing her with...admiration? Or was it suspicion? Well, Jay didn't care. She just wanted to fight this tom.
"State your name and business," she growled, arching her back and unsheathing her claws. "Or may the mercy of Jay the-"
"Flame and snow and ash and sky," the tom finally said, getting up to inspect the kittypet. He circled her, as if making sure she was the one.
Jay swiped at him, but she barely grazed a whisker. She instead flattened her ears and gave a low growl. "What crazy-talk is that? No, wait. I-"
"StarClan gave me message," the tom explained. He didn't seem to feel threatened, just like all the other cats Jay had tried to fight. "I'm supposed to create a 'clan.' They told me that I needed a cat of 'fire and snow and ash and-'"
"StarClan? You're supposed to create a 'clam?'" Jay stepped back. "Look, just get off my territory, okay?"
Blaze looked astonished. "YOUR territory?" His whiskers twitched in amusement. "I grew up here, in this very field...well, here and a nearby forest."
"I don't care! Go away!"
"But StarClan-"
"And you mention this 'StarClan,'" Jay hissed, not really doing a good job of getting the tresspasser off of her territory. "Who are they? What's so special about them that makes you listen to them?" That's when something hit her. What was so special about her that "StarClan" needed?
Blaze finally looked a bit angry, but he explained anyway. "They are the only cats who really cared about me. They know I have a future, and they value that, unlike..." he stopped, stepping back, then murmured, "You have to help me. It's your destiny."
Jay was startled. She gave the tom a growl and bolted back to the Twoleg nest.
